You should be able to do them all you want.
They should be legal.
Just like reefer, cocaine, horse, opium, and all the rest.
This does not mean that you should be able to do them while driving a car. Or a plane. Or a train. Or anything else.
If you want to shoot up, or smoke or drink in the privacy of your own home, go ahead.
Society should not care.
It is your choice.
But if you choose to endanger others, it becomes society's problem.
If you drive a vehicle of any kind while under the negative influence of anything, society has a legitimate objective in stopping you.
Ergo, drinking is legal. You can get as drunk as you want at home. But if you drive, that is illegal. Makes perfect sense.
The same reasoning should apply to every other drug. Every one. Every single one.
Without exception.
Society could save some money if it did away with law enforcement of our current drug possession laws.
You possess drugs? No problem. You under the influence the drugs and driving a train? That is a problem.
It is a simple distinction. It is an important distinction.
You have a heroin addiction? Keep it at home.
You need money to buy some more heroin? Earn it. Society has no problem.
You decide to steal so you can buy more? Society has a problem.
Arrest people and subject them to our criminal justice system for hurting others. Not for hurting themselves.
If they are hurting themselves, and no one else, they need to be in our public health system, nor our criminal justice system.
If they are hurting themselves AND others, they need to be in both.
Right now, drug addicts are almost exclusively in or criminal justice system. Not our public health system.
Take some money from our jails and give them to our hospitals.
We will all be better for it.
