The Sheriff's department without a county

According to this Denver Post editorial, "Denver's deputies don't need more arrest powers," the Denver Sheriff's Department wants more power. (Of course they do.)

For those unfamiliar with the City and County of Denver, the two entities share the same exact boundaries, and govern the exact same people and the exact some property. There is no unincorported Denver County where the Sheriff has sole jurisdiction, because there is no unincorporated Denver County.

Instead of giving the Sheriff's Department what it wants, I have a better idea: completely do away with the Denver Sheriff's Department and put it all under the Denver Police. Eliminate overhead and duplicative administration. The people win.
Of course, it will not happen. The Sheriff's Department is its own little fiefdom, and what's best for us poor vassals is irrelevant to the little princes who rule over us.
